Looking for what´s up in Buenos Aires this week? Try out some of these activities we´ve planned for our students:

Monday:

La Bomba de Tiempo with BAIS

BAIS is meeting at their offices at Ayacucho 1571, ground floor, at 18:30 to walk over to Konex to see the infamous Bomba de Tiempo drum show. Price is only 35 pesos and tickets will be purchased at the door. Don´t miss this chance for great music and dancing

Tuesday:

La Catedral Tango with BAIS

BAIS is meeting at La Catedral for a Tango dinner, show, and dancing. It´s located at Sarmiento 4006 and Medrano. Entrance 20 pesos.

Wednesday:

Head over to the MALBA to see the Salvador Dalí exhibit, Los Ojos del Surrealismo. The Malba is located on Colón and Alvear. Wednesday students enter free!

Thursday:

Spanglish Language Exchange

Head over to Koh Lanta on Gorriti 4647 for Spanglish! Spanglish is a program that matches native spanish speakers with native english speakers for short 5 minute conversations in both languages. Participants rotate and get a chance to practice their second language and meet new people. Price is 15USD and comes with a drink

Friday:

Bike tour with BAIS

Meet at Ayacucho 1571, ground floor, at 13:15 (tour at 14:00) for a bike tour of Buenos Aires. Bike tour comes with bike, helment, water, and a gift. Price is 36USD or 135 pesos.

Saturday:

Parque de la Costa Amusement Park with BAIS

BAIS will be meeting up in front of the clock tower at Retiro metro station on Saturday at 10:00 to head to Parque de la Costa in Tigre. Train costs 1 pesos and 25 cents, and the park entrance in September is 2 for 1, so only 25 pesos!! Don´t miss out!

Tired of Doing Touristy things?

Take a sailboat trip on the delta.... Who knew Buenos Aires has such a beautiful port? For 100 pesos a person you can take a private sailboat tour for 2 to 3 hours. Call the captain Gonzalo to set a date for a sailing trip (schedule depends on weather)

The coolest things to do in the city can be found on the Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires website, it can be a real pain to navigate at first, but if you can figure it out there are some really interesting things going on around the city and guess what? They are free, and they are not targeted solely for tourists.

Another cultural activity that has been reccomended, is a dance/theatre show called Sin Pecado Concebido. So Like I said if you a really tired of the same old tourist options, this show is supposed to be a very original fusion of tango, theatre and history.

Aristocratic Buenos Aires

The guides are informative and have a great sense of humor, and they are local so they can give insider tips on things that might not be on the normal tourist circuit. There are two different tours: a tour of downtown and a tour of “aristocratic” Buenos Aires, which includes neighbhorhoods such as Recoleta and Retiro. Get together with fellow classmates either before or after class to watch a film from our collection. We have a wide range of Argentinean films. If you are tired of eating emanadas and parilla Sushi is the way to go. This small restaurant tucked away in Belgrano takes you out of Palermo into a more residential part of the city.

La Bicicleta Naranja

Bicycle Tour

This is a fun and informative way to see a large part of the city in a short amount of time. It´s also a good way to get outdoors and work off some of the medialunas, dulce de leche, and steaks that have probably been consumed by this point! Tours start at 9:30 and 2:00, so both morning and afternoon students can participate. The tour includes a bilingual guide, water, and insurance. Some of the destinations include Caminito in La Boca, the Ecological Reserve, Puerto Madero, Plaza de Mayo, and many, many more!

Walking tours of street art in Buenos Aires. If you are looking for a modern cultural tour, graffitimundo is the place to go. Visited hidden walls, galleries and artists studios, and participate in stencil workshops. This is a fantastic way to meet artists and learn more about street art in Argentina.

Nightlife Suggestion

Buenos Aires is famous for its nightlife, and if you enjoy going out you will not be let down. Be ready to make it a late night: clubs here do not really get going until 1:30-2:00 in the morning. Buenos Aires Pub Crawl

Join them for a night of bar hopping! The Pub Crawl has several routes through the most popular tourist neighbhorhoods, such as San Telmo, Palermo, and the Microcentro. The tour starts at a bar or restaurant with registration, which lasts for an hour and includes unlimited pizza, beer, and wine. Then, the group head to 3 different bars. Pub crawlers get a free shot in each bar, and discounts the whole night! They take tons of photos as well, which you can see on Facebook when they upload them. Around 2:00 a.m., everyone is taken to a nightclub, and gets to jump the line and get in for free! This is a great way to get to know people, as it is popular with locals and tourists from around the world. Íbero students get a special discount for this tour.

Students are heading to La Bomba de Tiempo! La Bomba is a live percussion show. The music is great and the energy is fantastic. The biggest activity for a Monday night, La Bomba is always a good time! It starts at 8:00 at the Centro Cultural Konex, but we recommend that you get there a bit earlier to avoid the long lines. Wednesday, October 20th
We will be going to a wine tasting to try some of the fantastic wine that Argentina has to offer! After the tasting, students will be able to head out to one of the city´s well-known after office parties! The after-office parties end early, so it´s great for those who want to go out during the week and still be ready for those morning classes.

Thursday, October 21st
We will be going to the show "A Ciegas con Luz". The show is put on by the Blind Theater, and takes place in COMPLETE darkness. The show also includes a gourmet tasting menu, and plenty of wine! It is a wonderful and unique experience.

Friday, October 22nd
Celebrate the end of the school week with the Buenos Aires Pub Crawl! They always provide a fun, organized and festive night out!! Íbero students receive a special discount!

Saturday October 23rd
We will be spending the afternoon horseback riding at a beautiful park 30 minutes outside of the city. The horses are very well trained, the park is beautiful, and it is a very personalized experience. It always gets rave reviews!

Íbero Night Out - we will be meeting for happy hour at a bar near the school. Then, we will head to one of the best and oldest pizzerias in Buenos Aires to grab a few slices of pizza, faina, or empanadas. If anyone wants dessert, we will then go to one of the city´s best Gelato shops to get some amazing ice cream!

Weekend
-Experience the nightlife of Buenos Aires with the BsAs Pub Crawl!
-Take a day trip to Colonia, Uruguay. This fascinating town has an interesting history of both Spanish and Portuguese colonozation, and it is a nice quiet day trip away from Buenos Aires
-Horseback Riding: One of the most highly rated things to do in Buenos Aires. You may not think of Buenos Aires as a place to ride, but the horses and park are spectacular, and it´s a great way to unwind for a day.

Monday
Free City Tour! It gets great reviews and there´s no charge for the tour! The guides work off tips alone. Students who are new to Buenos Aires or who are looking for a little more information on the city can join the walking tour. There is a morning tour of the downtown area, and then an afternoon tour of the aristocratic neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.

Tuesday
Salsa lessons at the Viruta Milonga. For $20 pesos, students have the chance to practice salsa! While not as popular in Buenos Aires as the tango, salsa is very popular in other countries farther north, and there are a few salsa clubs in Buenos Aires. It´s a lot of fun and a bit easier than tango! The Salsa lessons start at 8:30 and last until 10:00, and then the milonga stays open until 11:30 so that everyone can practice!

Thursday
Ibero dinner for students & friends. We will be going to a Tenedor Libre in Palermo to enjoy LOTS of good food and get the chance to get to know each other outside of class!
Friday
The big event of the week - The Vinos and Bodegas exposition at La Rural. With a ticket to the event, students will receive a wine glass and will be able to visit representatives from a variety of Argentinean vineyards and taste the delicious wines they have to offer! About 30 vineyards will be represented, as well as some food products as well. The event is in Palermo, and ends at 11:00, so after the expo students will have the perfect opportunity to go out to one of the many bars and nightclubs in Palermo!

Weekend
Here are some activities going on this weekend!
-Trip to the Palermo Zoo: This is not only a very pretty zoo, but also has very interesting architechture. It will be great to stroll around, especially in the nice weather we´ve been having.
-Buenos Aires Pub Crawl: One of the best ways to go out on the town in Buenos Aires. An all-inclusive night that is full of fun and ends at one of the city´s hottest "boliches", or nightclubs.
-Horseback Riding: Feeling the need to get out of the city? We can set you up with a fantastic horseback riding excursion. The horses are fantastic, and the owner truly cares about the experience of each rider! Not just a lazy trail ride - you will learn how to ride! A gallop is gauranteed for all!
Soccer game: Students had a fantastic time at the Boca Juniors game on Sunday. Boca won, and La 12 (the 12th player, as fans call themselves) were as much fun to watch as the game was! Students who missed out will have the chance to see another game this weekend!

Tuesday
Students are meeting around 9:30 for a typical Argentinean asado. An asado is the Argentinean version of a barbeque, and in the country with the best beef in the world, it cannot be skipped! This is a great chance to participate in something that is normally only accesible if you have a connection with an Argentinean family! Great food and lots of fun!
Wednesday
Students have the chance to practice their Spanish with native speakers at the Spanglish language exchange. Participants speak with a native Spanish speaker for 5 minutes in English and 5 minutes in Spanish. It´s a great way to practice what you´ve learned in class!

Friday and Saturday
Head out for a night on the town with the Buenos Aires Pub Crawl! This is a very fun way to experience the wonderful nightlife that Buenos Aires has to offer, and to meet people from all over the world (including locals)!

Sunday
Students will have a chance to go and see a Boca Juniors home game. The Boca team is known for its passionate fans and for the fun (and crazy) atmosphere at its home games. It is an unforgettable experience and we highly reccommend going if you can!

Íbero students will be meeting at 8:30 to have dinner together at a Tenedor Libre restaurant in Palermo. A tenedor libre, which literally means "free fork", is a buffet-style restaurant. The particular restaurant we will visit offers a mix of Chinese and Argentinean food, a fresh salad bar, a parilla where you can order meat, and unlimited ice cream!

Friday
Students will be getting together for a night out with the Buenos Aires Pub Crawl! The Pub Crawl is a great way to meet people and to go out and sample the incredible nightlife that Buenos Aires offers. They start out at a bar for an hour, where they offer unlimited wine, beer, and pizza. Then the group heads off to several bars, getting a free shot at each one! The night ends with transport to one of the biggest boliches in town, where students can dance the night away in true Porteño fashion.

Sunday
We have arranged a special horseback riding tour for Sunday. We will be going to a beautiful nature reserve for a couple hours of riding. After the horseback ride, we will stay at the ranch and enjoy a true Argentinean family-style asado. The ranch only buys the best meat from their local butcher, and the food is incredible. This is a wonderful activity, and is a fun way to see the countryside and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires.

On Friday we will be meeting at 8:00 at a bar in Barrio Norte for their happy hour. Afterwards, we will head to one of the classic pizza restaurants on Corrientes to eat. The restaurant is famous for their empanadas, faina, and of course their pizza! If anyone is up for dessert afterwards, we will be going to one of the best gelato shops in Buenos Aires. After that, we have the option to stay out and go to one of the city´s famous nightclubs!

Horseback riding with Caballos A La Par.
We are trying to organize a group to go horseback riding on Sunday afternoon. This is an excellent company, and you will actually RIDE, and not just sit on the horse while it follows the horse in front of it. A gallop is gauranteed, even for those who have never ridden before. The ride takes place in a beautiful park about 30 minutes outside of the city.
Price: $240 pesos - includes transfer in and out of the city, 2-2.5 hours of riding, coffee and pastries, and safety equipment.

One of our professors will be putting on a FREE conversation workshop from 3:30-5:00 in the afternoon.

Thursday July 22nd
Daytime:
Bike tours with Bicicleta Naranja. The tours are $80 pesos for Íbero students (normally $105) and take place at 9:30 for afternoon students and 2:00 for morning students. The guided tours last 3-4 hours and include a helmet, insurance, and a water bottle. It is a great way to get a feel for a large part of the city in a short tour!

Evening:
Dinner for students at a laid-back Arabian restaurant in Palermo. Dinner will be at 8:30, more details to come!

Friday July 23rd
The Buenos Aires Pub Crawl
We´ll be meeting with the Pub Crawl at 10:00 for registration. On Friday nights they tour the bars of the Microcentro. Check out their website for more details. It´s a great way to meet travelers, foreigners living in Buenos Aires, and locals!

Dinner for Ibero students!
We are meeting at 8:30 at the Celta Bar located close to the school. The price is $35 pesos, and includes a drink, pasta, and desert. The restaurant is located in the microcentro on at Sarmiento 1702, which is the corner of Sarmiento and Rodriguez Peña.

Thursday Bike tours with Bicicleta Naranja!

A fun way to see a large part of the city in a short amount of time. Tours start at 9:30 and 2:00, so both morning and afternoon students can participate. The price is only $80 pesos for Íbero students (normally it is 105 pesos).

Free tickets to Bahrein, a multi-level club located downtown. More information to come!

Saturday

We will go to the Hipódromo to see some horse races. Afterwards we will go to the casino which is next to theHipódromo. This event is exciting and something different, we will go with a big group so it’s the perfect opportunity to meet some new people! The event is FREE!

Saturday Night

Check with the office for free tickets to Pachá. Pachá is an international chain of clubs, and is known to be the top site for electronic music in Buenos Aires. This Saturday is the Ministry of Sound. Free tickets are valid until 2:00 a.m. The club is located on the costanera, on the edge of the river.

Also, Ibero has a special deal with the Buenos Aires Pub Crawl. Join them this Saturday in San Telmo for a nocturnal tour of Buenos Aires. The special price for students is 45 pesos (normally 60) and includes:

Free pizza, beer and wine for 1 hour during registration.

A visit to 3 bars with a shooter in each one.

Transfer to a nightclub and free entrance without having to wait in line!

The nightclub for Saturday is Crobar in Palermo, which is also another must-see if you like nightlife!

There is a trip to Tigre, a small, quiet town just outside of Buenos Aires. A perfect daytrip away from the city! We will meet at 11.00 hrs in front of the Retiro train station, on the square under the big clock! In Tigre we will walk around to get to know the city and the deltas and we will go to the local market where you can buy some authentic Argentine souvenirs! FREE EVENT! You just pay the train which is around 2 pesos.

La Bomba de Tiempo is back!

La Bomba de Tiempo (The Time Bomb) is a wildly popular percussion group that plays on Monday nights at the Centro Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131). If you like concerts, you will enjoy La Bomba! Tickets are $20 pesos in advance and $25 at the door. La Bomba starts at 8:00, but we advise arriving around 7 to see the opening act and avoid the long lines. While waiting to get in, you can take advantage of the street vendors selling food and drinks: once you are inside the Konex center prices are a bit steeper.

Monday, March 22: La Bomba de Tiempo! This is an improvised percussion performance held every Monday evening in the Konex Cultural Center (Sarmiento 3131). Starts at 8, but there’s always a line, so get there early. Entry is 20 pesos.

Tuesday, March 23: Check out the Collección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat, an art museum in Puerto Madero. It has work by some international artists but a lot of Argentine art too. Open from 12 to 9 pm and entry is 15 pesos. Address: Oleg Cossettini 141.

Wednesday, March 24 is a national holiday, so don’t forget that we won’t have class. Enjoy your day off!

Thursday, March 25: We suggest dinner at Cumaná, a restaurant with lots of traditional food from different parts of Argentina. It’s open all evening, and should cost somewhere around 40 pesos. Address: Rodriguez Peña 1149.

Friday, March 26: Coffee at Las Violetas, one of Buenos Aires’ most traditional cafés. Address: Rivadavia 3899. Open all day.

Sunday, March 28: Visit the San Telmo feria, which runs along Defensa st. between the Casa Rosada and Parque Lezama. Find souvenirs, Argentine crafts, antiques and delicious food!

Tuesday, February 16, we suggest lunch or dinner at Parrilla “Las Brasas.” Offers a wide variety of food and delicious grilled beef. Montevideo 378. Open all day. A meal plus something to drink will cost around 60 pesos.

Wednesday, February 17, take a trip to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Entrance is free. In addition to the permanent collection, there’s a photography exhibit until February 28. Address: Libertador 1473. Open from 12:30 to 8:30 pm.

Thursday, February 18, we suggest “La Palacio de la Pizza,” an authentic Buenos Aires pizzeria. Want something you won’t get at home? Try the fugazzeta (pizza with mozzerella and onions) and a slice of faina (made from chickpeas—sort of like polenta. A common side order for pizza). Corrientes 838. Approx. 40 pesos.

Friday, February 19, we suggest going to a milonga called La Viruta. Held at the Armenian Cultural Center in Palermo, La Viruta offers tango lessons in the evening (schedule: http://www.lavirutatango.com/clases_de_baile.html) and a milonga afterwards that goes from midnight on. Mostly tango with a little salsa and rock and roll mixed in. Entry is 18 pesos. Armenia 1366.

Saturday, February 20, we suggest going to the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel. The former home of the legendary tango singer has been converted into a small cultural center. Jean Jaures 735. Open from 10 am to 7 pm.

Hi Íbero students,
Here are some things we think you shouldn't miss during your time in Buenos Aires--enjoy!

Monday, February 8: a movie at Íbero (in the Cine room, 2 pm). "El Abrazo Partido" is the story of Ariel Makaroff, the grandson of Holocaust-era Polish refugees. Filmed in the Once neighborhood of Buenos Aires, it's a great story and interesting look at the city.

Tuesday, February 9, we suggest going to La Catedral, a milonga in Almagro (Sarmiento 4006). The dancing starts at around 11 pm (if you don't dance, just go to watch and have a drink) and there are beginner classes before, at around 8:30 pm. A big space with crazy art on the walls and a sculpture of a human heart hanging from the ceiling. Entry costs 15 pesos.

Wednesday, February 10, we suggest dinner at a parilla in San Telmo called El Desnivel (Defensa 855). Good atmosphere and great grilled beef. Open from noon till midnight. Dinner will cost 45 pesos or so.

Thursday, February 11, we suggest El Banchero, a traditional Buenos Aires pizzeria (Corrientes 1300). It's open all day, so go for lunch or dinner. A meal will cost you somewhere around 40 pesos.

Friday, February 12, we suggest La Peña del Colorado (Guemes 3657). This is a restaurant specializing in traditional Argentine food--locro, humitas, empanadas. It has live music on weekend evenings--traditional bands, guitars, etc. A great show and a look at the traditions of the other provinces of Argentina. Open for lunch and dinner every day. Cost: around 45 pesos.

Saturday, February 13, we recommend a trip to the Museo Xul Solar (Laprida 1212). Xul Solar was an Argentine painter, sculptor, writer, and inventor of imaginary languages...this museum has a variety of his (mainly surreal) work. It's open from 12 to 7, and at 3:30 there's a guided tour. Entry: 10 pesos.

Here are our suggestions for the first week of February--a variety of things to keep you occupied while you're not in class!

Monday, February 1: We will be showing a movie in Íbero in the Cine room at 2 pm. “La Suerte Está Echada” (The Die Is Cast). Here’s the synopsis, according to Amazon.com:

Sebastian Borensztein's comedy The Die Is Cast stars Marcelo Mazzarello and Gaston Pauls as half-brothers. As the film opens each of them becomes unemployed. Believing he is the subject of a curse, the theatrical Felipe (Mazzarello) heads to his father's deathbed where he and his half brother decide to grant their father's wish. After dad asks to try cocaine, the men head out attempting to score the goods while overcoming the curse.

Tuesday, February 2: There will be the weekly asado (Argentine barbeque) at the Art Factory Hostel, located at Piedras 545. At 8:30 pm there will be grilled beef of all sorts, choripán (chorizo sandwiches), drinks and conversation with other visitors to Buenos Aires. Friday, February 5: We recommend ending the school week with dinner and a tango show at “La Casa de Anibal Troilo.” Offers a wide variety of Argentine dishes, wine, and a tango show featuring dancers, musicians and singers.

Saturday, February 6: Head to the Feria de los Mataderos, a weekly fair offering food, crafts (including artisanal leather and silver products), folkloric music, dancing and gauchos (cowboys). This fair focuses more on the other provinces of Argentina (not just Buenos Aires), so it’s well worth the trip.

Friday, January 29: Go to Bar Las Violetas after class. This is a traditional bar, restaurant and café on the corner of Rivadavia and Medrano. Founded in 1884, it has been recognized as one of the restaurants that best represents Buenos Aires. Las Violetas is located at Rivadavia 3899 and is open all day.

Saturday, January 30: We recommend another classic bar and restaurant, this one in the traditional neighborhood of San Telmo. Bar Sur, on the corner of Estados Unidos and Balcarce, features a traditional tango show, musicians, dancers and singers. Address: Estados Unidos 299. Open all day, but the entertainment runs from 8 pm to 2 am.

Thursday, January 7, we suggest another Buenos Aires must-see: Café Tortoni, arguably the most famous café in the city. The classic building with its antique wood, stained glass and high ceilings is the perfect place to have coffee and do some people-watching. Open all day. Friday, January 8, we are offering two activities. In the afternoon, we will have a conversation workshop with Carolina at Íbero. Go to the intersection of Juramento and Arribeños—or take the train (get on the Ramal Mitre) from Retiro to Estación Belgrano—and wander the shops and restaurants for an afternoon. Hola Íbero students!

We want to let you all know what's going on these next few weeks--we have lots of activities planned and hope that you can join us! From now on, we're offering a mix of official activities (events with specific times and meeting places) with suggestions (things you can do on your own time frame).

Since this post is coming out midweek, first we'll fill you in on the previous activities and then let you know what's happening the rest of the week.

This past Monday, December 7,
for example, there was an asado at the Art Factory Hostel. An asado is an Argentine barbeque, and you definitely have to experience one before you leave the country. We were reminded why Argentina's reputation for having the best beef in the world is justified as soon as we tasted the juicy grilled steaks and the choripán (chorizo sausage in the middle of a fresh baguette). The smell alone is worth the trip, and we love the relaxed and friendly atmosphere at Art Factory.

Tuesday the 8th
was a national holiday, so there was no class. A relaxing day off.

Today (Wednesday the 9th),
we're suggesting dinner at El Sanjuanino--a restaurant where you can get a taste of traditional Argentine food. we will be showing Historias Minimas, an Argentine movie, for free, here at Íbero. We won't give away the plot, but the gorgeous scenery (it was filmed in Patagonia) will make you want to do some traveling. Come to the Cine room at 2 pm.

Friday, December 11,
there will be two activities. The first (from 2:30 to 3:30, at Íbero) is a conversation workshop with Carolina. This is perfect for people who want some extra practice using the Spanish they learn in class. Plus, it's free!
Later on, at Art Factory, there will be a show with a couple of live bands at 9 pm.

Saturday, December 12,
there will be a caminata (guided walk) around San Telmo beginning at 11 am. Be sure to RSVP with Emilio, the guide, at 4981 7160 anytime from now till 10:20 am Saturday. The tour costs 25 pesos and leaves from Art Factory (Piedras 545). San Telmo is one of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and definitely worth a wander--explore the cobblestone streets, turn-of-the-century cafes, tango bars and colonial architecture.

Hola Íbero blog readers,

After having been on a short break we are starting of with a bunch of new activities this coming week. Today, at 2 o´clock in the afternoon we will be watching the movie ´Nueve Reinas´, a very interesting Argentinian thriller which was filmed in Buenos Aires. It´s a movie we would like to recommend anyone who hasn´t seen it yet. If you feel like enjoying a movie while practising your Spanish? Meet us at 2pm in the Aula Cine. And don´t worry; ofcourse the movie will have subtitles.

Tuesday evening there will be an ´asado´ or barbecue organised in the Art Factory Hostel. Everyone is more then welcome to come, enjoy the food, people and have a drink

Wednesday we would like to get together at the Pizzería Romario at 21 o´clock to enjoy one of Buenos Aires´ best pizza places. It´s cheap, cosy and very good.

Thursday during the day we are planning on going for a guided walk through the cute, historic neighbourhood of San Telmo. Anyone who would like to get to know this neighbourhood, should definatly join. In the evening their will be a Punch Night organised in the Art Factory Hostel. Everyone who is tired from the walk, from classes or just feels like having a drink is more then welcome to join in.

Finally on friday, to top of a week in which everyone probably learned a lot, we are organising an hour of conversation at Íbero. Join us from 14.30 till 15.30 to practice your skills!

How is everyone enjoying this week? Hopefully you are having a great time exploring new places, getting to know new people and of course learning more Spanish. This week we are taking a break from our activities, we have some suggestions below for you to check out on your own and will be back in action next week!

Tuesday we will have our weekly screening of an Argentine movie. This week we are going to watch a very famous film called "Nueve reinas". This is a thriller filmed about 8 years ago in Buenos Aires. Besides watching an entertaining movie, this is great practice for adjusting to hearing Spanish spoken at a normal speed along with learning colloquial words and phrases. If you would like to join us, meet Tuesday at 2 pm in Aula Cine.

Wednesday night, you can check out a Tango class in Palermo. La Viruta, is a well known place where many young people, porteños, and lovers of tango go for clases and to practice during the milonga. Every day, there are classes for all types of dance from tango to rock and salsa. You can pay and take all the clases offered that day or just stay for one class. The class starts at 10 pm and entrance is just 16 pesos.

If you haven't been yet you can check out the famous Café Tortoni, the most classic café in Buenos Aires. The café opened in 1858 and even today maintains its large salon and historic style. Many Argentine intellectuals like Jorge Luis Borges and Alfonsina Storni frequented Tortoni and the café has a small museum that includes pictures from over the years. The Cafe is located on Av. de Mayo 825.

A very interesting museum to see is the Museum Xul Solar. This famous Argentine artist lived during the first half of the 20th century and died in his 60's. Xul Solar was a vanguardist painter with a very unique style. Although the museum is not huge, it is a must see for anyone interested in modern art. The Museum is located at Laprida 1212.

Finally, The Feria de Recoleta is one of the largest and most interesting that takes place in Buenos Aires and is a great way to spend an afternoon. This feria has a style some would call hippie, because many of the artisans are less traditional than those you find in San Telmo, for example. Besides seeing the Feria, you should visit Recoleta Cemetery and the Centro Cultural Recoleta (which has very neat art exhibitions and performances) that are both close by.

How is everyone this week?!

Hopefully you are taking advantage of the great weather and exploring Buenos Aires (or even taking trips around Argentina!). We wanted to let you know what things we did during the week and the activities we enjoyed. Last week was extremely exciting because we watched the Superclásico fútbol game between Boca and River. If you weren't at the game hopefully you watched part of one of the most important sports events of the year. Remember to check the previous post for the activities that we have planned for this week. You will find all the information, times, and places to meet us this week and use your Spanish!

Monday we had our Conversation Practice at a very interesting spot, the classic Café Los Galgos, on the corner of Lavalle and Av. Callao. This is one of the oldest bars in the city and is a tipical porteño café. You almost feel like you are traveling back in time. We met at Los Galgos at 6 to have coffee while having a conversation in Spanish. In addition to getting to know other Íbero students we were able to practice things we are learning in our Spanish classes.

Tuesday night, we had dinner at a popular empanada restaurant called "El Sanjuanino", in Recoleta. As you can guess, this restaurant specializes in empanadas from the province of San Juan, on the border of Chile. Every region in Argentina has their own specific recipe for empanadas with especially interesting varieties from Salta, Tucumán, etc. We had a great time trying sangría sanjuanina(red wine, lemon, orange juice and sugar) with empanadas. We tried all different types of empanadas, some with meat, others with cheese and onion, some with mozzerella and tomato, etc. El Sanjuanino is a great place to come and experience one of the tastiest traditions of Argentina!

Thursday was our weekly Argentine film screening. We watched Historias Mínimas, a movie filmed in Patagonia in which most of the actors are from the province and do not have professional training. We met in the afternoon to watch the movie here at Íbero and practice listening to Spanish spoken at a normal speed. This is a great way to build vocabulary and comprehension.

Sunday, students from Íbero had the opportunity to see one of the most important Argentine fútbol games of the year, the Superclásico between the teams Boca and River. The school organized a trip to go to the stadium together with some of our friends from BAIS ARGENTINA. We met in the afternoon at the last stop on the D Line of the subway, Congreso de Tucumán. From there, we went to eat near the stadium. The game started at 4:15 and our seats were in the "Popular" section. It was a 100% Argentine experience, watching the game and taking part in singing the songs. Everyone visiting Buenos Aires should experience a fútbol game!

Hey Íbero amigos,

How is everyone? We wanted to let you know what activities we are planning for next week. Remember you can always bring your friends along, even if they aren't studying at Íbero. No need to r.s.v.p. either, just show up and have a good time (remember to use your Spanish!).

We hope to see you around this week!

Monday we will have our first conversation practice of the week. We will go to a very well known and famous café called, Café La aPaz. The idea is to meet outside of school to share an informal conversation using our Spanish. If you would like to come practice Spanish, check out this historic cafe, and meet some new people, we will see you at 6 pm on Monday at the corner of Montevideo and Corrientes, just four blocks from the school.

Tuesday we are going to watch an Argentine film here at Íbero. This week we will see "Kamchatka", a famous Argentine film that deals with the theme of the "desaparecidos", those who disappeared during the 70's in Argentina. In addition to featuring some of the best Argentine actors, the film deals with a very important topic in Argentine history. If you would like to join us for the movie, we will meet at 2pm in aula cine here at Íbero.

Wednesday we are going to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, a huge museum housing art from many different time periods and from all around the world. Bellas Artes is the largest and most important art museum in Buenos Aires. There are exhibitions of everything from European, Medieval, and Latin American art as well as collections specifically by Argentine artists. Along with MALBA, Bellas Artes is a museum you have to visit while you are in Argentina! If you want to get to know the museum we are meeting at Íbero at 4 pm to go together. Entrance is free!

Thursday morning we will hold another conversation practice, this time for those students who have class in the afternoon. We are meeting at a café called: Establecimiento General de Café, on Av. Pueyrredón. This is a great chance to have a conversation around any topic students like while enjoying coffee and medialunas. Join us Thursday at 11 am on Avenida Pueyrredón at 1529 ¡Nos vemos!

Friday, we are going to visit barrio Chino. Located in the residencial zone of Belgrano the China Town here has flourished in recent years. Here you can buy everything you need to make and enjoy traditional Chinese / Asian food. You will find everything from spices, tea, to delicious sushi and carts selling snacks on the street. Never imagined a China Town in a country like Argentina? You should definitely come with us to Barrio Chino! We will meet on Friday at the corner of Av. Santa Fe and Av. Pueyrredón.

Hi Íbero blog friends,

Hopefully everyone is enjoying their time in Buenos Aires and learning a lot in class! You might even be gearing up for the exciting fútbol game between the Boca Juniors and River Plate. We have some great activities to tell you about this week, and remember you are more than welcome to invite your friends along. We hope you come practice your Spanish with us this week, get to know new people, or check out a new place in the city!

Monday was the commemoration of Christopher Columbus arriving on the shores of America, which meant no classes as all schools and most businesses were closed.

Tuesday we held our weekly film screening of an Argentine movie. We watched "El Hijo de la novia", a movie that features some of the best actors from the time period when it was filmed. Watching movies (with subtitles in English or Español) is a great way to practice getting used to hearing spanish spoken at a normal speed and also helps build vocabulary. This week joing us for a movie called ¨Historias Minimas.¨

Thursday morning we hosted our first conversation practice of the week at Café Tortoni, which is the oldest cafe in Buenos Aires (founded in 1858!). We met at 11 am in front of Tortoni to practice our Spanish and enjoy coffee at this historic café. If you have not been, we definitely recommend you check out Café Tortoni.

Friday we hosted our second conversation practice of the week. We met up at 6 pm in a modern bar/restaurant called: Cumaná. This is a place where many young people come to eat traditional food from different regions of Argentina. We drank mate and ate bizcochos with pan dulce. A lot of students enjoyed the event and had fun using their Spanish in conversation with Juan Ignacio.

Saturday afternoon, we went on a bike tour of Puerto Madero. 10 students met Juan Ignacio at the school and rented bikes at the entrance of the Reserva Ecológica, We rode the entire trail and took a break to rest on the beach to take in the scenery. The park is really beautiful, such a rarity for being so close to the city. This is a great place to have a picnic with friends or go running during the week. If you get a chance you should enjoy some fresh air at the Ecological Reserve in Puerto Madero!

Hola friends of Íbero Spanish,

We hope you are having a great week, we wanted to let you know what activities we have planned for the coming week, the new places we want to visit with you and the activities we are looking forward to. Remember you can invite your friends, boyfriend or girlfriend or even family members to our activities, it doesn't matter if they aren't studying at Íbero. The only thing that matters is that you show up and have a good time, while using your Spanish and getting to know Buenos Aires. See you this week!

For Monday the 19th of October we have our Conversation Practice in a bar very close to the school. This week we will meet at Bar Los Galgos, a classic bar that has lots of history and is a point of reference for porteños who work and live around downtown. We always hold our conversations in local bars and cafes that represent a unique part of porteño culture. If you want to have an informal conversation in Spanish in a cool cafe, meet us Monday at 6 pm at café Los Galgos on the corner of Avenida Callao and Lavalle street.

Tuesday we will host a Welcome Dinner for those students new to Íbero. We will welcome new and current students at the empanada restaurant called: El Sanjuanino. This is a classic restaurant where you can try typical Argentinean food, and specialties from the Cuyó región. Like most of you know, empanadas are a typical Argentine food. Throughout the country each region has their own unique way of making empanadas, so an empanada from Salta is different than an empanada from Tucuman. El Sanjuanino is famous for its Empanadas in the style of San Juan, a province near Mendoza located near the border of Chile. Come try some excellent food with friends, we will meet on the corner of Avenida Callao and the street Posadas at 8:30 pm. ¡Nos vemos!

Wednesday we are going to visit Malba, the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires. Along with the Museum Nacional de Bellas Artes, Malba is on of the best known and widely recognized museums in the city. The museum has art from all parts of Latin America and is an excellent museum to visit for those who love art. If this sounds interesting, join us Wednesday at the school at 4 pm so we can take the collectivo together. Entrance to the museum is just 5 pesos.

Thursday afternoon we are having our weekly Movie screening here at Íbero. We hold this activity every week when we meet in the aula Cine to watch an Argentine film with subtitles in English, Spanish, or sometimes without subtitles at all. This is a great way to practice listening to Spanish spoken at a normal speed. This week we are watching "Historias Mínimas"; a movie filmed in Patagonia in which many of the actors are regular townspeople instead of professionals. Meet us Thursday at 2pm at Íbero for a neat movie that will surely improve your Spanish.

Friday we will hold another Conversation Practice to use what we are learning in class. We will meet at bar Estilo San Telmo, a bar on the street Perú 259, located in MicroCentro. We will be able to practice speaking Spanish and try mate, a typical Argentine beverage that is an important part of everyday life here in Argentina. We will see you Friday at 6 pm for a conversation in Spanish at Estilo San Telmo, Perú 259.

Sunday, we will get to know the barrio of San Isidro, located just north of the city. San Isidro is located just near the river and is a great place to explore on foot. We will also visit the Cathedral of San Isidro and finish our trip with a visit to a local cafe. This is a great chance to get to know an entirely different and slightly more peaceful part of the city. If you would like to join us meet at the school at 2 pm and we will take the train to San Isidro! ¡Nos vemos!

Hi Friends of Íbero Spanish,

How is Everyone? Hopefully you are enjoying Spring, getting to know the city, and meeting new people all through your study of Spanish. How could you not enjoy yourself in a city with such much to do? We wanted to share with you what activities we are planning for next week. Feel free to invite your friends whether or not they are studying at Íbero, the more the merrier. We plan all of our activities so that everyone can show up and have a great time. We look forward to seeing you this week!

You should already know: Monday the 12th of October is a national holiday. All schools, banks and offices will be closed in commemoration of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Coast of America in 1492. Classes will begin Tuesday!

Tuesday we will host our weekly film screening here at the school. This week we are going to watch "El Hijo de la Novia", a very famous Argentine film from 2001. The film was nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film in 2001. If you would like to come and practice Spanish comprehension as well as see an excellent film, we will see you Tuesday at 2pm here at Íbero.

Wednesday we are going to visit the house where Carlos Gardel lived, the most important and well known Tango Singer of all time. We will visit the house he lived in during his infancy and youth, that is located in the neighborhood of Abasto, near the shopping center. We will learn about Gardel's life and listen to some of his most famous tangos. For those who are interested in this genre of music, this trip is a must! If you would like to join us, we will meet in the school Wednesday at 3pm to take the subte.

Thursday we will hold our weekly conversation practice for students who have class in the afternoon. We will meet at Café Tortoni, the oldest café in the city, founded in 1858. We will meet at the café at 11am to have an informal conversation in Spanish to practice what we are learning during the week in class. Don't worry if you only speak a little Spanish, the idea is to always improve. The café is located on Avenida de Mayo 829 and we will meet Thursday at 11am.

Friday we will have another conversation practice, this time in the afternoon, so the students in the morning can also practice their Spanish. We will go to a bar called Cumaná, which offers many different types of regional Argentine food. We will meet there at 6pm and have a relaxed conversation for around 2 hours. The bar is on Rodríguez Peña 1149, half a block from Avenida Santa Fe. Take advantage of this opportunity to try traditional Argentine food, drink mate and practice your Spanish outside of the school. ¡Nos vemos!

Finally, Saturday we are going on a Bike Tour of Puerto Madero. We will meet at the School at 3pm, rent bikes in Puerto Madero and get to know the Ecological Reserve Park. The Ecological Reserve of Buenos Aires is a large park behind Puerto Madero, where many people go on their weekends. There is a large path about 7 kilometers long where you can run or ride a bike. It is a great way to experience nature while being so close to the city. We will see you at 3pm at Íbero!

Hi Íbero blog followers,

How was your weekend? Hopefully you enjoyed the great weather and got to know the city a little better. We hope you are having a great time in Buenos Aires, meeting new people, visitng new places and of course practicing Spanish! We wanted to let you know what we were up to last weekend and tell you about some of the things we did, places we went, etc. If you are looking for information on the activities planned for this week remember to check the previous post. Also, you are welcome to invite your friends to any of our activities. No need to rsvp, just show up & have a good time.

Monday we had our first conversation practice of the week. We went to a café called Estilo San Telmo, on the street Perú at 259. We met around 6pm and practiced speaking in Spanish till around 8. We also tried mate, while Juan Ignacio explained the history behind this traditional Argentine beverage. Sharing mate and having a conversation in Spanish was a nice relaxed way to use our Spanish outside of Íbero. If you haven't joined us yet for our "talleres de conversación" you should definitely check it out!

Wednesday afternoon we went to the Museum of Popular Art José Hernández. Students joined Juan Ignacio to visit this unique museum. We saw an exhibition of silver and china, as well as religious art from the North of the country, and even saw mask used in African rituals. This was a really interesting museum. In the patio we saw two gauchos peforming a "payada" they were filming for a television program on folkcloric traditions. If you haven't been, you should definitely check out the museum.

Thursday we had our weekly film screening at the school. We watched a movie called "Nos sos vos, soy yo", a comedy about a couple that breaks up and life after love. Watching movies with or without subtitles is a great way to practice hearing and understanding Spanish.

Friday we went with Juan Ignacio to Café del Ateneo Grand Splendid for another taller de conversación or Conversation Practice. We met at 6pm on the corner of Riobamba and la Avenida Santa Fe to go to the bookstore-café. While we enjoyed soda and café we practiced some of the things we are learning in class. We practiced speaking for about 2 and a half hours, asking Juan Ignacio when we did not know how to say something in Spanish. We had a great time and suggest everyone visit this café, which once a theater and is the largest bookstore in the city.

Saturday afternoon we went to the neighborhood of Boca and walked around what is called the Caminito. We met at 3pm to take the collectivo to Avenida Corrientes. Juan Ignacio told us about the history of barrio, how it came to be, who lived there, etc. We were able to visit a conventillo (click on the word for a description) and see how immigrants to Buenos Aires lived, with many people occupying very small living spaces. This is a unique barrio with a lot of history (like all of the barrios in Buenos Aires) and absolutely worth a visit.

How is everyone's week going?? We hope everyone is enjoying their classes, getting to know the city and practicing their Spanish! We want to tell you about the activities we have planned for next week. Remember, you can invite your friends and even your roommates to our activities. No need to rsvp, just show up and enjoy! For Monday we will have our weekly Argentine film screening here at Íbero! We are going to watch a movie called Elsa y Fred, a drama that tells the story of a unique couple that falls in love. The movie was filmed in 2005, and got great reviews. If you are looking to watch a good movie at the same time as practicing your Spanish you should join us! Meet us at the school at 2 pm in the film room. ¡Los esperamos!

Tuesday night we are hosting our traditional welcome dinner for new Íbero students. We are going to a very well known Buenos Aires Pizzería . The restaurant is called Romario, and is a great place to go with friends or even to have a romantic dinner. We are going to get to know our new students and have a conversation in Spanish with our activities director, Juan Ignacio. If you would like to come, we will meet Tuesday at 8:30 PM on the corner of the streets Ayacucho and Arenales in the neighborhood of Recoleta. Bring around 25 to 30 pesos for dinner per person. ¡Nos vemos!

Wednesday afternoon we are going to visit the Museum of Decorative Art of Buenos Aires. This is a very important museum that is housed in an antique house. The house belonged to a very prestigious family of porteña society and today functions as a museum. The house itself is interesting to see and you can check out all of its rooms and salons, all of which are very well kept. We will meet at the school Wednesday at 3 pm to journey together by Collectivo. Entrance to the museum is only 5 pesos.

Thursday we will have our activity for our students who take classes in the afternoon. We will visit a café and practice Spanish Conversation together. We will meet at a café in the barrio of Palermo called: Establecimiento General del Café, part of a chain of Argentine cafés that has grown over the years. The café is known for selling coffee from around the world, from places like Tanzania or Kenia. We are going to meet at 11 AM at the café on Avenida Pueyrredón 1529, between the streets Arenales and Beruti. Come join us to use the Spanish you are learning at Íbero!

Friday we will have our taller de conversación or Conversation Practice, this time in the afternoon, for those who take class in the morning. We will meet at Café La Paz, on Corrientes Avenue. This café was a hot spot for artists, poets, revolutionaries and intellectuals during the 60's. If you want to practice Spanish outside of school we will see you at 6 pm on the corner of Montevideo and Corrientes. Look forward to seeing you!

Sunday afternoon, we are going to visit the Feria of Mataderos. This is an excellent feria to visit, located outside of the city. The Feria showcases customs and craftwork typical to the rural culture of Argentina's interior. Many people from Buenos Aires say this feria is one of the best, even better than those of Recoleta and San Telmo. In addition to trying regional food and browsing work by local artisans, the Feria has different performances by musicians. People also perform traditional dances from the interior of Argentina. This is a very unique feria that everyone should experience. We are going to meet at the school on Sunday at 3 pm to take the collectivo from Plaza de Mayo to the feria.

How was everyone's week??

Hi Ibero blog followers,

We hope you are doing well, enjoying Buenos Aires, despite the rainy weekend we had. Although it has been chilly we did not let this get in the way of our activities and hope you have been taking advantage of everything our beautiful city has to offer. We would like to tell you about what we were up to last week. Remember, you can check out the activities for this week in the previous blog post.

Monday, September 21st was the first official day of Spring and ¨Dia del estudiante¨, or Student Day. We kicked off the week with our weekly conversation practice that took place in bar Cumaná. Also a restaurant offering different types of regional Argentine food, the bar was a great place to have an informal conversation in Spanish. Around 6 students joined Juan Ignacio for 2 hours of conversation and trying mate along with excellent savory and sweet empanadas. Without a doubt we had a great time, and bar Cumaná is a good place to try typical Argentine food at reasonable prices.

Tuesday we had a welcome lunch for those students new to the school. We went to a very well known pizzeria called Pizzería Güerrín, one of the classic pizzarías along Avenida Corrientes that has been around for more than 70 years. 8 students joined Juan Ignacio and shared a great lunch porteña style. This is definitely a place to visit again!

Wednesday we went to the Museum of Spanish Art, Enrique Larreta. This is a museum that is in a colonial house in the barrio of Belgrano, near china town. We toured the house and saw many works of medieval art. We also walk around the park of the house which was very impressive. The museum was a very interesting place to visit, from the art work on exhibition to the beautifully kept antique house.

Finally, Friday afternoon we saw the movie "Nueve reinas", a very famous and well received thriller filmed about 7 years ago. The film is full of action but has a complex and suprising plot that everyone who watched it enjoyed. At Íbero we believe watching movies in Spanish is a great way to practice listening and comprehension. Students have the option to turn on subtitles in English or Spanish for extra practice. This week we are going to see a movie called "No sos vos, soy yo",Thursday afternoon at 2 pm, we hope to see you then!

Our plans for next week

Hi Ibero blog buddies,

We hope you are doing well, enjoying Spring in Buenos Aires where each day is more beautiful. Hopefully you are getting out to explore the city, meeting new people, and of course, learning Spanish! We would like to let you know about the activities we have planned for next week. As you all know, our activities are free of charge and you are welcome to invite friends to come along. No need to rsvp to events, just show up!

Monday afternoon we are having our weekly conversation practice or "nuestro taller de conversación". We are meeting in a bar near the school to have an informal chat about whatever interests you. This week we are meeting at 6 pm at Estilo Bar San Telmo, a café/bar on Perú 259. Here, we are going to try Mate, a typical Argentine tea-like beverage. If you would like to come, meet us at Estilo Bar San Telmo at 6 for fun Spanish conversation with friends. ¡Nos vemos!

Tuesday morning we are going to visit the Museum Sívori, a very famous art museum in the city. It is not the largest musuem, but it is without a doubt one of the most important in the city. To the students who are interestedin art or those who want to practice their Spanish, we are going to meet at the corner of Avenida del Libertador and Avenida Sarmiento at 11 am. See you there!

Wednesday we are going to visit el Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández. This is a very special museum: the building is where they have exhibitions on popular art, from clothing to china and including religious art from the 19th century. This is a unique opportunity to get to know the culture and a little history about Argentina. The barrio where the Museum is located is in a part of the city that is really beautiful. We will meet at the school at 3 pm and entrance to the museum is free!

Thursday we will have our weekly film screening. Every week we watch an Argentine film so that we can practice hearing Spanish as well as see some excellent movies made here in Argentina. If the students need subtitles in English or Spanish we watch the movie with subtitles. This week we are going to see "No sos vos, soy yo", an entertaining comedy with many well kown actors. If you want to practice your Spanish while watching a fun movie we will see you Thursday at 2 pm at the school.

Friday afternoon we are going to a café called "Ateneo Grand Esplendid". It is actually a bookstore that used to be a theater and is now also home to a café. We will meet at 6 pm on the corner of Riobamba and Avenida Santa Fe, half a block from Ateneo. ¡Nos vemos!

Saturday afternoon, we are going to tour La Boca and the Caminito. We are going to walk around this colorful barrio in the south of the city and see the very unique houses that make up the neighborhood. We will also pass thorugh the feria and a few smaller markets that are located along the street. We will also see the famous mural of the Boca Juniors figurine, the fútbol club which originated in this barrio and along with River Plate, is the largest and most important fútbol club in Argentina. If you would like to join us, we will meet at the school at 3 pm. We will take a collectivo and return around 6 in the afternoon. You don't want to miss it!

How is it going?

Hey there Íbero amigos,

We hope you are having a great time in Buenos Aires. We just wanted to take a minute and tell you about some of the things we did last week and the places we went. Remember that our schedule of activities for this week is already published in the previous blog entry. You are always welcome to bring friends along to our activities and there is no extra charge to participate. We hope to see you this week!

Last Monday we went to see the performance of La Bomba de Tiempo, that takes place every week. The percussion peformance La Bomba de Tiempo has become very popular with the art and music circles of Buenos Aires. The performance showcases 17 percussionists that improvise using a language of symbols, led by the director. The show takes place every Monday at la Ciudad Cultural Kónex. 12 students and Juan Ignacio met at the school at 6 pm and took Subte linea B to Abasto, and walked to Kónex. Everyone had a great time, dancing to the music and having drinks with friends. If you haven't been, don't miss out on this unforgettable experience!

Wednesday, we went to visit the Museum, MALBA (Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires). We met at Íbero and took collectivo line 102 to MALBA. There was an exhibition of two very famous Argentine artisits whose work we were able to see. We had a guided tour in Spanish, which was a great opportunity to practice listening to the language. MALBA is an excellent museum that we enjoyed and that no one visiting Argentina should miss.

Thursday, we had our movie screening at the school. We watched the movie, El Hijo de la Novia, a very well known Argentine film which is also recognized internationally. Watching movies in Spanish is a great way to practice, and if students want extra help we put subtitles in English or Spanish.

Friday afternoon we had our weekly conversation meet-up. We went to café Tortoni and had a good time hanging out in this historic cafe, practicing Spanish for over 2 hours. 7 students and Juan Ignacio had coffee and relaxed, chatting in Spanish. What a great way to use what we are learning in class!

On Saturday, we spent the day in Tigre. We met at Íbero in the morning and went together to Retiro train station where we took the train to Tigre, which is just outside of the city. We walked around the Fruit Market (one of the largest ferias in all of Buenos Aires), and walked along Paseo Victorica, near the border of the river, stopping to have lunch at a parrilla. It was a beautiful day and we got to know a tranquil place outside of the city. You should go to Tigre! If you are interested in escaping to Tigre for a day or two and aren't sure how to get there, you can ask Juan Ignacio. He will tell you exactly how to get to Tigre, as well as recommend a number of other interesting places to visit.

Hey there Íbero amigos!

Hopefully you are enjoying the great weather here in Buenos Aires as well as your Spanish classes. We wanted to let you know about the activities we have planned for next week. You are always welcome to bring your friends who don't go to Íbero to our activities. The activities are totally free (if we are going to a museum you might have to pay a small entrance fee) and there is no need to rsvp. We hope to see you this week!

For Monday afternoon we are going to have our weekly conversation practice, or "taller semanal de conversación". The point of having these weekly conversations is to meet somewhere outside of the school to practice what we are learning in class. We always go to a bar or café close by and enjoy coffee or another beverage while having an informal chat with Juan Ignacio about ourselves, where we come from, Argentina, or whatever we want to talk about. More than practice Spanish, students get to know each other. This Monday our taller de conversación will be at 6 in the afternoon in a café where we will try the traditional argentine drink, mate. The bar is called Estilo San Telmo and is located on Perú at 259 ¡Nos vemos!

On Tuesday we invite the students of Íbero to join us for lunch. We are going to a very traditional pizzería in Buenos Aires. Corrientes Avenue has always been a place full of cultural offerings and has many excellent pizzerías. We are going to eat at Güerrín, one of the most classic pizzerías which is very famous among locals. Buenos Aires has great pizza, some say better than in Italy! If you want to have some good food with friends meet us at 1:30pm at the pizzería on Corrientes at 1368, just two blocks from the school.

Wednesday we are going to visit a Museum of Art in the classic barrio of Belgrano. The Museum of Spanish Art, Enrique Larreta, has many works from the re-birth of the Baroque period. The museum is located in the barrio of Belgrano, which is an old exclusive barrio of Buenos Aires, with lots of green spaces and antique houses. If you are interested in art or just want to get to know a different part of Buenos Aires, we are going to meet at 3pm at the school to take the bus together.

Thursday we will have our conversation practice, or "taller de conversación" in the morning for the students who have class in the afternoon. This get together will be at a 11 AM in a bar similar to the one we are visiting Monday, called Cumaná, decorated in the style of an Argentine ranch. At Cumaná we will also drink mate and have "pan de campo" with jam and cookies. Also, this restaurant is a great place to buy dessert empanadas, filled with dulce de leche and different types of marmalade. If you would like to try some Argentine delicacies and have conversation in Spanish we will meet at Cumaná on Rodríguez Peña at 1149 at 11 in the morning on Thursday. See you there!

Friday we will have our weekly movie screening. This activity, along with our talleres de conversación, is held every week. Watching an Argentine movie with subtitles in Spanish or English is a great way to practice listening, as well as getting to know Argentine Cinema. This Friday at 2 in the afternoon we are going to watch a film called, "Nueve Reinas", a thriller that is considered on the best Argentine films of the last few years.

Lastly, Saturday we are going to visit the Buenos Aires Zoo. This Zoo is located in the zone of Plaza Italia. The Zoo is without a doubt a frequently visited site for all those coming to Buenos Aires. The Zoo is pretty large, and you can spend a day meandering through the exhibits and enjoying the sun. Entrance to the zoo is just 12 pesos, and we will meet at Íbero on Saturday at 3 PM to take the Subte together. We should finish our visit around 6 PM, but you are welcome to stay as much time as you want (as long as the Zoo is open!)

Hopefully at least one of our activities strikes you as interesting. Taking part in these events is a great way to get to know Buenos Aires and improve your Spanish.

How was everyone's week?

Hey Íbero blog followers,

Spring is getting closer and it is already starting to get warmer. Now is the perfect time to go to a park and enjoy other places out in the open air of Buenos Aires. We had a great time last week and wanted to let everyone know about the activities we enjoyed. Just a reminder, that the activities for this week are already published in the previous post. Remember, our activities are open to everyone, so feel free to invite your friends! Any question you have don't hesitate to contact us. ¡Nos vemos!

Monday the 7th of September we had our weekly conversation practice, or "taller de conversación semanal". More than 10 students joined Juan Ignacio at Café La Paz. We had coffee and spoke in Spanish about ourselves and our respective countries. The result was a very interesting conversation for all and an excellent exercise in practicing what we are studying in class. The Café La Paz is a very famous cafe because during the 60's it was a gathering place for many intellectuals and poets. We talked a lot, till about 20.30! Needless to say, we had a great time.

Tuesday we had our weekly screening of an Argentine film here at Íbero. We watched "Kamchatka", a well known Argentine film that tells through the protagonist, a 10 year old boy, a story of a family that escaped the dictatorship of the 1970's. Watching movies like this is a great way to practice understanding Spanish, and it helps sometimes to watch the movie with subtitles while listening to the Spanish. This week we are going to watch "El Hijo de la novia", one of the most famous Argentine films and a candidate for the Oscar in 2001. If you would like to join us for a great movie we will see you Thursday at 2pm!

Wednesday we went to the Japanese Garden of Buenos Aires. Tucked away in the barrio of Palermo, spending the afternoon in this garden is a great way to enjoy being outdoors in Buenos Aires. The park has a lake filled with Koi fish and is decorated with oriental bridges and statues. Five students from Íbero joined Juan Ignacio to walk around the Garden and take pictures. Students were able to talk with Juan Ignacio in Spanish while enjoying the great scenery .

Saturday we went to the famous Recoleta Cemetary and walked around the Fería at Recoleta. We were able to see different statues in the cemetary, exploring the walkways throughout the various tombs. We saw the tombs and mausoleums ofmany important historical figures that Juan Ignacio explained. We took a lot of pictures thanks to the photographer among the students. After visiting the cemetary, we went to the feria, where we saw all kinds of artisanal goods, crafts, clothes, etc to buy. Students bought gifts for family and things to remember Buenos Aires by as well as enjoyed an sunny saturday afternoon.

Plans for the week of September 14th

Hi there Íbero Amigos,

How is everyone? Hopefully you are looking forward to a beautiful Spring in Buenos Aires, getting to know new friends, and of course, learning Spanish. We would like to let you know about the activities we have planned for the week to come. Remember that you can always bring a friend along, we want everyone who is interested to enjoy what we have planned.

See you this week!

For Monday night we are planning to see a famous drum troup well known by the youth of Buenos Aires. The performance is called La Bomba de Tiempo, and is a percussion band of 15 musicians that improvise and comunicate between each other using signals the group developed. The show is a really interesting musical performance. The show takes place in the Cultural Center in the barrio of Balvanera. The performance takes place from seven in the afternoon to around ten at night. If you are interested, we will meet at six in the afternoon at the school to go to the show together. Entrance to the performance is $20 (veinte pesos). You don't want to miss it!

Wednesday we are going to visit MALBA, which is the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires. This Museum, along with the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, are two of the most important art museums in the city as well as being the largest. Malba has Latin American art from some of the most important figures from all over Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina. Malba also has an excellent collection of European Contemporary art from the 20th Century. We will see an exhibition of works from Brasilian Surrealists, Mexican muralists, work by Frida Khalo as well as art from many well recognized Argentine artists like Agustín Xul Solar and Emilio Pettoruti. If you would like to join us, we are going to meet at the school on Wednesday at 4 pm. Entrance to the museum is only $5 (cinco pesos). ¡Nos vemos!

Thursday we are going to watch an Argentine movie called: "El Hijo de La Novia", a film made in 2001 that tells the story of a son and his parents. This film is one of the most famous contemporary Argentine movies and was a candidate for the Oscar in 2002. If you want to see an excellent movie and practice a little Spanish we will see you Thursday at 2 pm.

Friday we will hold our weekly taller de conversación or Spanish conversation practice. The idea is to share an informal conversation in a bar or café close to the school. This time we are going to café Tortoni, the oldest and most well-known café in Buenos Aires, founded in 1858. During the 60's, Tortoni was a hot spot for intelectuals and writers like Borges. We will meet at the café (Avenida de Mayo 829) at 4 pm. Don't miss this opportunity to practice your Spanish in a beautiful and historic café!

Saturday we are going to get up a little early to take advantage of a trip that is definitely worth it. We will meet at the school to travel to Tigre, just north of the city. Tigre is a small but modern city made up of little river inlets. We will see one of The largest and most important ferías or markets in Buenos Aires: the Fruit Market, that offers stands selling everything. There is also the Delta in Tigre as well as many islands where people live, we will board a boat to take a trip around the Delta. We will eat at a very well known parilla near the Fruit Market. To get to Tigre we have to take a short train ride from Retiro, so we will meet at Íbero at 11 am to leave for Tigre!
